State committed to scientific coal mining: Governor Tathagata Roy

SHILLONG: Governor Tathagata Roy on Friday told the State Assembly that the government is committed to promoting scientific, secure and environmentally friendly coal mining in the state complying with all statutory Central legislations.

Roy said that the Government is holding consultation with stakeholders and experts to secure environment-friendly mining and also educate the mine owners about procedures to be followed in starting coal mining under provisions of the MMDR Act, 1957 and the Mineral Concession Rules, 1960.

“The government is committed to restoring the environment, damages by coal mining in the State. The State has been collecting 10 percent of the value from coal exported under the order of the apex court and NGT and deposited towards the Meghalaya Environment Protection and Restoration Fund. An action plan has been prepared for restoration of environment damages by coal mining and pilot projects have already commenced,” the Governor said.

“The State Government has also notified the guidelines for utilization of MEPRF fund. The District Mineral Foundation has been notified in eight districts to minimize or mitigate adverse effects of mining on the environment, health and for implementing various developmental and welfare programs in mining-affected areas.
