SHILLONG: Going in line with the Union government to slash the petrol and diesel prices by Rs. 2.50, the Meghalaya government on Wednesday decided to follow suit by announcing a rebate of Rs 2.50 by midnight. The decision was taken by the cabinet during the meeting held at the State Secretariat. Stating that the decision taken by the government is a bold one considering the present financial constraints, the Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong added that it will cost the state exchequer Rs 15 crores annually. Asked as to how the government will bear the cost, Tynsong said, “We will tell the revenue generating departments to work out strategies for balancing the rebate and the income generation.” He cited the departments of Excise, Registration, Taxation, and Stamps (ERTS), Legal Meteorology, Forest and Environment, Mining and Geology and Transport as the establishments that can carry out the exercise.
