Strange combination surfaces in State politics

Staff Correspondent

Shillong, June 20: Politics of convenience or opportunistic politics which has been the hallmark of Meghalaya politics for decades has seemingly once again raised its ugly head. The Congress and the Nationalist People’s Party (NPP) are apparently coming together to dethrone the United Democratic Party (UDP)-led Executive Committee (EC) in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Counci. Again the Congress has announced to extend support to the Public Democratic Allaince (PDA) headed by the rebel Congress leader Pynshnganian N Syiem in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). With the political quagmire turning murkier and the political parties virtually at loggerheads in the State legislature, speaking to The Sentnel, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday justified the development on ground that the district councils have their own autonomy. “The CEM and the EC and the MDC’s who are elected will decide on what kind of combination they wish to have,” said the Chief Minister, adding, “If the elected MDCs take a call, it’s up to them; we want to ensure that there is stability and development.”
