Guwahati: Soon after inking a historic agreement to end the 50-year-old dispute between Assam and Meghalaya, the Survey of India has been asked to coordinate with both the states for conducting a joint inspection of the inter-state boundary to redraw the map before a bill is introduced in the parliament.

''The Survey of India has been asked to do a joint inspection with both state governments. Once that process is completed, the centre to introduce in Parliament a bill to redraw the border,'' Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangama said while interacting with media persons on Thursday night.

He further informed that the process will take some time.

Sangma said that the trust-building exercise between the two states will lay down principles for future engagements.

The Chief Minister of Assam and Meghalaya on Tuesday signed an agreement to resolve the 50-year-old boundary dispute between their states.

The said agreement was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, chief secretaries of both the states as well as other officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

''The signing of the agreement to end the decades-long dispute is a historic day for the northeast,'' said Amit Shah.

As per reports, a total of 11 representatives of the Meghalaya government and nine of Assam were present in the meeting at the MHA office.

Earlier, both Assam and Meghalaya governments had come up with a draft resolution to resolve the border disputes in six 12 regions, along their state boundaries.

The Assam-Meghalaya border dispute areas are of Upper Tarabari, Gazang reserve forest, Hahim, Langpih, Borduar, Boklapara, Nongwah, Matamur, Khanapara-Pilangkata, Deshdemoreah Block I and Block II, Khanduli and Retacherra.
