Unchanged Water Level Greatly Affecting Rescue Mission

Shillong: The Indian Navy divers and that of the NDRF have not been able to restart their rescue operation since the water level at the flooded illegal coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district has remained unchanged. According to the Spokesperson rescue operation, R Susngi, on Friday, the Coal India Limited was able to insert their pump into the old shaft at 3:30 pm and fittings and connections of pipes are still going on.

“The pump is expected to be functional by tomorrow morning. Kirloskar also able to put down their two pumps in the main shaft and connection of pipes also is done side by side,” Susngi said.The spokesperson also informed that pumping of water from the main shaft is also expected by Friday.

The Indian Navy will determine the water level after dewatering the water main shaft by the Kirloskar Borthers Ltd.

Meanwhile, Susngi also said that the Fire Service Odisha on Friday pumped water from the old shaft and water receded by 3.5 ft which comes to around 9 lakh liters by using two pumps.

It was reported that the water level in the second old shaft that was pumped yesterday was again found to have risen to the same level this morning.
