SHILLONG: The anti-Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) movement in the region in general and Meghalaya in particular affected the prospects of United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Jemino Mawthoh.

Congress candidate Vincent H Pala, who won the Shillong Lok Sabha seat for a third term defeated Mawthoh by a margin of 1, 52, 433 votes.

Pala polled 4, 19, 689 votes while Mawthoh secured 2, 67, 256 votes.

Mawthoh who contested from the UDP was the common candidate of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition.

UDP vice-president Allantry Dkhar while analyzing the reasons for Mawthoh’s defeat blamed the Congress for spreading misinformation that the party would work together with the BJP if he is elected.

“Many prospective voters did not vote for our candidate due to the fear instilled by the Congress especially on the Citizenship Amendment Bill,” Dkhar said. According to him, the electorates were conditioned in such a way that they believed the UDP was working together with the BJP.

“We had made it clear that the fight was between the regional parties and the national parties,” the UDP vice-president said.

Dkhar also said that the Congress had sown fear in the minds of the electorates especially in the rural areas by stating that if Mawthoh wins then it would be like a verdict in favour of Modi and the people would not be allowed to eat beef or go to Churches.
