United Democratic Party (UDP) To Elect Party Chief on September 11

A REPORTER

SHILLONG: Senior working president of UDP Bindo M Lanong told The Sentinel that the United Democratic Party (UDP) had wished to reinstate Dr. Donkupar as the party president. However, following the sudden demise of Dr Roy, now the party will have to hold a general council of the UDP on September 11 this year to elect a full-fledged president of the party.

He added that if the president of a party passes away, the normal practice followed is that the senior-most leader within the party looks after the functioning of the party until an interim president is appointed. “This has been the practice in many political parties. However, as the UDP is a democratic party hence this matter will be taken up at a party meeting which will be held this week to discuss the appointment of an interim president to run the party.”

When asked, he said that the UDP members are united and have a common understanding on party issues, and hence any decision on this matter will be taken after due discussion with various party leaders and party workers; adding that it will be a collective decision of all stakeholders in the party.

He also said that the proposed meet will also deliberate on the future course of action of the UDP.
