SHILLONG: Senior working president of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Bindo M Lanong has said that the party welcomes the decision of party workers at Shella constituency to field Balajeid Kupar Synrem in the by-election at Shella.

It may be mentioned that Synrem is the son of Late Dr Donkupar Roy who was the MLA of the constituency and Speaker at the Legislative Assembly.

“We are not against the decision of the party workers and leaders of UDP at Shella to field Synrem in the by-election. However this matter has to be taken in a consensus along with the people of the constituency,” Lanong told The Sentinel on Tuesday.

He said that a decision on this matter will be taken after the public meeting of UDP which will be held at Shella on August 22.

When asked, if there is any threat to the party in the by-election as even the Congress is preparing to field a candidate, he said, “Anybody is welcome to contest the election. We cannot hold any political party against their will. However, the UDP has contested the election from Shella and has won seven times in a row.”

On the Speaker’s post, he said, “If Dr. Donkupar Roy, our president had not died, the post would still be with the UDP. Hence this matter would be discussed with our partners in the State Government through an MDA meeting to find a consensus candidate for the position of Speaker.”
