Shillong, July 21: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP) Nongjri area unit has demanded the up-gradation of the sub health centre at Nongjri into Public Health Centre (PHC).

In a memorandum submitted to the District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO) West Khasi Hills District, Nongstoin, the FKJGP said that the sub health centre caters to the medical needs of approximately 6031 people in 28 villages.

“Since infrastructure in the Nongjri Sub Health Centre is inadequate, patients have to go to Riangdo CHC, which is about 30 km from here,” Dominic Marwein president of the Nongjri area unit said.

According to Marwein, patients who need immediate treatment are often left in the lurch because of inadequate infrastructure at the Sub Health Centre at Nongjri coupled with the deplorable road to the CHC at Riangdo.

“Most of the time patients, many of whom are poor, have to face a sad situation as many families do not have the means to carry the patients to the Riangdo CHC in the time of emergency,” the FKJGP, Nongjri area unit said.

Marwein said that the poor infrastructure at the Nongjri Sub Health Centre leads to a lot of hardship to the poor villagers.
