SHILLONG: In an attempt to spread a positive message to the local youths of Meghalaya to distance themselves from drugs and other bad habits having a negative impact on society, the Global Mission Factor Association (GMFA) will hold a free music concert on April 14 at Polo ground featuring an international gospel metal band from the US, Whitecross.

“We want to send a message through this concert to the youths to shy away from drugs and alcohol,” president of GMFA Rimando Judah Cunville told reporters here on Friday.

He informed that the concert will also feature a home band, The Shillong Gospelers.

“When we (GMFA) hold such concerts or mega events, we always make sure that its entry-free as we do not believe in commercialization in the name of art or music so that all the youths from different economic backgrounds can be involved,” he said.

When asked on the scenario of gospel metal bands in Meghalaya, treasurer of GMFA Tirot Suchiang said, “As of right now I don’t know if we can see this as one of the Ministry of the Church, hence I don’t know if in Shillong, Christians can accept gospel metal bands.”

He informed that not only gospel metal bands are present in the State but there are also Christian blues bands.

“Perceptions have been created with regards to this kind of music (metal music). When people think of this music, their perception turns to ‘wild lifestyle’. Hence this kind of music was not straight away embraced by many,” he said.
