SHILLONG: Former Nongkrem Constituency MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit attributed his defeat in the 2018 general election in the state to various factors and not because of money power. "If I had lost because of money power then I wouldn't have lost by a margin of only 70 plus votes,' Basaiawmoit told reporters at his residence after officially launching a new regional party in the state on Friday. When asked if his defeat is due to the fact that he was busy campaigning for other candidates, "This is also a wrong preseption even amongst my suppoters and it is not true." Basaiawmoit further said that if it is because he was never at his own constituency as he is busy campaigning for both HSPDP and UDP candidate then he would have already lost on the day of holding the last public rally but thousands of people attended. He pointed out that one of the factors is the alliance of the the with the UDP, however the UDP didn't support him in his constituency and other reason also.

It may be mentioned that Basaiawmoit was then the state President of the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP), however following his lost in the election he resigned from the position of President.
