Mining issue

Shillong: The re-elected Member of Parliament (MP) Vincent Pala categorically said that the ‘unholy political-miner nexus’ is one reason for the delay in getting an appropriate decision from the National GHreen Tribunal (NGT) and the Supreme Court.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Pala showed his disappointment on how the alleged presentation of the case by the State has prompted the NGT and the Supreme Court to take its own decision. “The Government should have passed a resolution in the House to allow coal mining that will be in sync with the need to preserve the environment”, stated Pala, adding, “The silence has further enhanced illegal coal mining and trafficking”.

“There has been a serious leakage of revenue because of this illegal mining. These illegal transporters are paying around Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 to facilitate the movement of the coal-laden trucks”, he stated, even as he went on record to say that the police, ministers, MDCs are getting their own share out of this illegal transportation”
