SHILLONG: In a move to provide better hygiene to the rural women, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Rakesh Sinha has promised to set up a small factory to produce sanitary pads for the females in his adopted village —Kongthong as well as the 18 villages located in the periphery.

Taking cognizance of the hygiene of the women, which he considered as "utmost importance",the Rajya Sabha MP told this correspondent that his decision is in sync with the August 15, 2020 from the Red Fort by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "It was a taboo for the common people. Inspired by him, I distributed almost 3,000-4,000 sanitary pads. In another village, I distributed 4,000. Now I have brought 1,000 sanitary pads.

"But this is not the solution. I am going to set up a vending machine from which they will be able to get five sanitary pads at one go, "stated Sinha, adding,"I'm planning to open a small factory of sanitary pads in the next stage.

''I shall request the State government to purchase sanitary pads prepared by the local people. This will create awareness and also promote health hygiene besides boosting income generation for the local populace."

At first, the offer of santitary pads shock some of the locals who were expecting monetary benefits.

But understanding the farsightedness of the MP, everyone accepted the health gifts as a welcome step, especially when sanitary pads is beyond their reach.
