SHILLONG: Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Titosstarwell Chyne said that as the head of the institution which protects the culture and tradition of the Khasis, it would be his duty to work together with traditional institutions.

"I urge that the functioning of the traditional institutions like the Syiemship (Himas) should go on smoothly without any discontentment, especially in the appointment of the Syiems," Chyne said. The CEM was speaking at a function to pay tribute to former Syiem of Hima Sohra, Duwan Sing Syiem, held at St. John Bosco Shrine Sohra on Saturday.

Chyne pointed out that in earlier years in Hima Sohra, there were rifts during the appointment of a Syiem and those who held the post did so on a temporary basis. "After my appointment as the CEM of the KHADC, I was instrumental in appointing a full-fledged Syiem in Hima Sohra," the CEM said. He said that there was need to document the rule of the Syiems of Hima Sohra over the years.

The CEM also added that there was also need to preserve the culture and tradition of not only the Himas but also of the indigenous Khasis as a whole. According to Chyne, Hima Sohra has its own culture and traditions, folklores and history that need to be preserved.
