Woman Charged Fine After Her Former Boyfriend Uploads Obscene Videos on Social Media

In a rather contradictory judgment passed by some elders of a village in Meghalaya, a woman has been asked to pay a fine of Rs. 3000 as her obscene videos and images are found available on social media. As reported by the victim, a man, named Mansrang Sangma of village Gairong in North Garo Hills district of Meghalaya was in a relationship with her and later cheated her by spreading her semi-nude pictures and videos on the internet. The elders of the village too, instead of taking the victim’s side, accused her of bad character and charged her with a monetary fine.

In addition to the fine of Rs. 3000, the woman was also asked to pay Rs. 1,500 to a local club as “atonement” for her “sin.” This is what the irony that instead of taking her side and consoling her for the mental stress she is suffering from due to her boyfriend’s act.

She has even filed an FIR at the Mendipathar Police Station on much before against her former boyfriend and said that he has uploaded the video when she broke off the relationship. She quoted, “During my relationship with him, he took my video without my knowledge. I happened to see the video and told him to delete it. But he has not deleted the video and the pictures.”

Realizing the trauma the victim might have gone through due to this incident, Agnes Kharshiing of the rights group, Civil Society Women’s Organisation told the media, “Instead of helping her, a victim of cybercrime, the elders of her village summoned her to a community meeting on September 7 and asked her to pay the penalty.”

However, the accused man has been arrested by the local police.
