Women groups raise pro-ILP, anti-CAA voices in Shillong

Shillong: A day before the special session of the State Legislative Assembly to bring ILP into the State is about to take place, women activists gathered near Mothphran Point to echo the same demand besides decrying the Centre for implementing the CAA.

The women groups (from all works of life) also raised the CAA issue. “The CAA is one legislation in the country where the government wants to torture its own citizens by pleasing the foreigners”, stated Deiwi Tongper in her speech during the rally, even as she added, “As vigilant women activists, we are not against any caste or religion but against foreigners who can possibly swamp into our State under different garb.”

Calling for the scrapping of the CAA besides the introduction of the ILP in the State, Tongper stated, “The CAA is a threat to the indigenous people. It should be scrapped because we are willing to shed blood for our future generation”.

Another prominent activist C Sohshang spoke on a similar tone, yet it was her caution on Benami transaction that even raised the ears of certain women folks in the gathering. “We fight for ILP and oppose the CAA but many are also giving our eating plates to others who prosper in Benami business”, stated Sohshang while exhorting those in such deals to come out of it.

While it is a known official fact that the District Council enforcement officials could not nail Benami deals when the locals rushed in to claim ownership over the business establishments in Iewduh, GS Road and other areas, Sohshang said, “Refrain from such deeds to make the fight for the indigenous people healthier”.

Meanwhile, all eyes and ears are on Thursday’s debate in the Assembly where a unanimous decision will be taken to ask the Centre to implement the ILP in the State. All political parties are on the “ayes”.
