Workshop on Geotextiles held in Shillong

SHILLONG: A one-day awareness workshop on ‘Next Frontiers in Civil Engineering: Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure of North East Region’ organized by the Ahmedabad Textile Industry’s Research Association (ATIRA) on behalf of the Office of the Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India in collaboration with Public Works Department, Government of Meghalaya was held on Monday at PWD, Conference Room, Shillong.

The programme was attended by P. R. Marwein, Secretary, PWD (R&B), B. P. Marak, Chief Engineer (NH), L. D. Suchiang, Chief Engineer, (Roads), M. N. Subramania, Director, ATIRA, S. C. Sarma, Expert Engineer, ATIRA-NERC, Engineers from PWD, PHE and Water Resources, among others.

M. N. Subramania, while speaking on the occasion said that the programme was organized to create awareness on the high strength polyster woven geotextiles, woven from multifilament geotextiles manufactured from high tenacity polyester filament yarns. Geotextiles which have high tensile strengths, low elongation, low creep and excellent durability are recommended for applications in the hilly regions for strengthening the road, ground improvement, basal reinforcement of embankments and also to stabilize the slope where the soil is very soft and loose due to heavy rainfall in the region, he added. The daylong workshop includes the technical sessions on the topics Scheme for Promotion Usage of Geotechnical Textiles in NER, Applications of three Dimensional Geocells in Highway Construction, Geotextile Testing Facilities in ATIRA, presentation on various Geotextile products and its applications from the house of Tech Fab India, Application on Geosynthetics in water storage reservoirs and Design of Highway drainage system using Geocomposite drainage layers.
