SHILLONG: Together with the rest of the world the office of the District Agriculture Officer, South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat today observed World Food Day 2018 on the theme “Our actions are our future”, at the Multipurpose Hall, Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Mawkyrwat wherein Kum Isawanda Laloo, Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills district graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Speaking on the occasion Kum Laloo said that the day was observed with a view to remind farmers on the need to increase food production in order to eradicate hunger and poverty by 2030.

She said that farmers are primary producers and has a major role to play in the development of an economy as we depend solely on farmers for food production.

While stating that even though there was an increase in production after the Green Revolution there are still people who went to sleep in hunger and about 212 millions in India died of malnutrition and the cause of which is poverty or low production due to rampant destruction of nature through human activities.

She therefore encourages farmers to use integrated farming and multi cropping in order to enhance production so as to be self sufficient and to ensure food security. She inspired farmers to take up organic farming and utilize their training skills in order to promote agriculture and in enhancing production on a wide scale.

She called upon farmers and educated unemployed youths to avail the benefits offered by the department through different schemes so that food Security is ensured and that we are free from hunger and poverty.
