World No Tobacco Day: Focus Is On Lung Health

Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG: This year, the focus of World No Tobacco Day is on “tobacco and lung health.” The campaign will focus on multiple ways to show how tobacco affects people’s lungs.

The campaign also aims at raising awareness on the risks posed by smoking and passive smoking, dangers of tobacco to lung health, the magnitude of death and illness from lung diseases caused by tobacco, emerging evidence on the link between tobacco smoking and tuberculosis deaths and the importance of lung health.

Globally, an estimated 165,000 children die before the age of five due to lower respiratory infections caused by passive smoking. Those who live on into adulthood continue to suffer the health consequences. In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of a one-third reduction in non-communicable disease mortality by 2030, tobacco control must be a priority for governments and communities worldwide.
