Guwahati: Mizoram has registered 5 more Covid-19 positive cases -- all Delhi returnees from Mamit district. With this, the total number of Covid-19 patients in the state rose to 117.

Officials said that 682 samples were tested at the Zoram Medical College (ZMC) yesterday, out of which 5 samples tested positive for the virus. According to official reports, all these patients are females between the ages of 21 -23 and are asymptomatic.

Yesterday, 5 more persons were found Covid-19 and they are all returnees from Delhi. One is an inpatient at the ZMC, one under home quarantine and three are under institutional quarantine.

It may be recalled that Mizoram's first patient, a 50-year-old patient who had returned from the Netherlands, had tested positive on March 25, and to date, remains the only patient who has been discharged after recovering.

It needs mention here that the cases have skyrocketed in Mizoram after the influx of migrants who were stranded in other states amid the lockdown. According to the Mizoram Government data, the Lunglei district is the hardest-hit district in the state.

To counter the spread of the virus, Mizoram has announced a complete lockdown in the state that came into effect on June 9 to mitigate the spread of the pathogen. The move, that was announced after a consultative meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Zoramthanga, comes as other states opened malls, restaurants, and places of worship after two months as part of the Central Government's 'Unlock-1' guidelines, expected to return life to normal in a "phased" manner.

Subsequently, it was notified that the Mizoram Government has decided to extend the quarantine period from 14 to 21 days.
