CHAMPHAI: In a significant operation, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police on Tuesday busted a drug consignment and seized methamphetamine tablets worth ₹173.73 crore at the Indo-Myanmar border in Champhai district. According to a statement from the Assam Rifles, the seized narcotics weighed 57.91 kg.

According to the report, acting on specific intelligence about narcotics movement, Assam Rifles, in collaboration with Zokhawthar Police, set up an ambush at Crossing Point 1, Vokte Kai. The joint team spotted suspected individuals carrying an illegal consignment and attempted to intercept them. However, the suspects managed to escape, abandoning the consignment, which was subsequently seized by the police.

The Assam Rifles, tasked with securing a 510-km stretch of the Indo-Myanmar border in Mizoram, has been actively working to curb illegal activities along the border. The 23 Sector Assam Rifles Headquarters, located in Aizawl’s Khatla, oversees three battalions, each managing six Company Operating Bases, to maintain strict surveillance and security along the porous border.

Meanwhile, last year, Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Excise & Narcotics Department, had recovered Methamphetamine tablets (approx. 1980 grams) from General Area New Siaha, Siaha District, Mizoram, and had apprehended two individuals on October 3. A joint operation had been launched by Assam Rifles and the Excise and Narcotics Department, Siaha, based on specific information about contraband items being smuggled into India from Myanmar. The entire consignment of Methamphetamine worth Rs 6,65,01,007 (Rupees six crores sixty-five lakhs one thousand and seven rupees only) and the two individuals had been taken into custody by the Excise and Narcotics Department, Siaha, for further investigation and legal proceedings, stated a press release.
