AIZAWL: Major General Suresh Bhambhu, a senior officer of the Assam Rifles, met with Mizoram’s governor, chief minister, and other officials on Friday. They discussed the current situation along the India-Myanmar border, focusing on security and how to manage the border effectively.
According to a defense spokesperson, Major General Bhambhu, the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East), met with Governor General (Retd) Vijay Kumar Singh and Chief Minister Lalduhoma separately. During these meetings, Bhambhu discussed the current situation along the 510 km India-Myanmar border and briefed both leaders on the preparedness of the paramilitary forces to manage border security.
The Assam Rifles officer also held talks with Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena and Director General of Police Anil Shukla, addressing the broader security issues in the region.
A post on the Chief Minister's official account on X stated, “Maj Gen Suresh Kumar Bhambhu, SM, IG Assam Rifles (East), called on the Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma. Key discussions included security issues and the relocation of Assam Rifles from Aizawl to Zokhawsang.
”In a separate development, Mizoram police seized a significant cache of arms and ammunition on Wednesday. These weapons were reportedly being supplied by an insurgent group based in Myanmar to a rebel organization in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).
The Mizoram Home Department stated that five people were arrested, including a leader of the Chin National Front (CNF), a rebel group in Myanmar. The six AK-47 rifles, 10,050 bullets, and 13 magazines were discovered in the Saithah village in the Myanmar border area. Preliminary inquiries indicate that the arms were intended for transactions between the CNF and the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF-P), a rebel organization in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).
The Assam Rifles are in charge of securing the 510 km long, unfenced border between Mizoram and Myanmar, while the Border Security Force (BSF) is responsible for the 318 km unfenced border between Mizoram and Bangladesh.
