Guwahati: Amid the return of citizens who were stranded in other parts due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, Mizoram has reported 12 fresh Covid-19 cases on Tuesday.

"12 new Covid-19 positive cases confirmed at Zoram Medical College, Mizoram. All are under professional care", Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga tweeted out earlier today.

120 samples were tested yesterday at the Zoram Medical College (ZMC) laboratory for Covid-19 and they all came back negative, Government sources said. 140 samples were collected yesterday, and out of those, 12 samples have now been tested positive for the deadly pathogen.

It is pertinent to mention here that Mizoram, that is fighting the Covid-19 on a war footing with the active implementation of social distancing and other precautionary measures, had not reported a single active case of the respiratory infection since its first patient, a 50-year-old pastor who had returned from the Netherlands, recovered at the Zoram Medical College in Falkawn.

Meanwhile, the death toll due to Covid-19 rose to 5,598 and the number of cases has climbed to 198,706 in the country. While the recovery rate in India is progressively increasing and has reached 48.19% amongst coronavirus patients, the health ministry said.

Internationally, 6,370,765 cases have been detected. While 2,904,691 persons have recovered from the respiratory illness, 377,516 people have died.
