Construction of the Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line To Be Accelerated in Mizoram

MIZORAM: The railway line connecting Bairabi and Sairang in Mizoram would be accelerated, according to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who spoke to Parliament on Wednesday.

In answer to a question from Mizoram MP C. Lalrosanga, Vaishnaw claimed that the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is completing the 51.38 km long Bhairabi-Sairang new railway line project at an estimated cost of Rs. 6,527 crore. "While the exact amount of time is uncertain, the railway line's development will be expedited," he added.

According to the Union Minister, Rs 4,343 crore of the Rs 6,527 crore has been spent, with Rs 1,036 crore put aside for fiscal 2021-2022. The project would have 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and 32 tunnels totalling 12.65 kilometres, according to Vaishnaw.

Work of a 51-kilometer broad gauge railway between Aizawl's Sairang and Bairabi, on the Assam border, began in 2015.

To gain the benefits of regional exchanges, a certain level of connection is essential. Geopolitical, geostrategic, and geoeconomic issues all play a role in national interests. It's vital to think about connectivity as a holistic concept that might lead to a change in people's lives rather than just building physical infrastructure for short-term strategic and economic reasons.

The North Eastern Council (NEC) is a focal point for the region's economic and social development. The NEC is subsidising infrastructure improvements in the area, with governors and chief ministers from these eight states serving as important members. The following are some recent NEC initiatives:

  • Improvements to five regional airports—Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Imphal, and Umroi—have been made in partnership with the Airport Authority of India. A new airport is also being built in Tezu, Arunachal Pradesh, using NEC financing.
  • The building of 10,500 kilometres of expressway roads in the Northeast has been completed and handed over to the states for maintenance. The North East Road Sector Development System comprises an express highway proposal along the Brahmaputra River, as well as the development of strategic roads such as the Doimukh (Arunachal Pradesh)-Harmuti (Assam) road, the Tura (Meghalaya)-Mankachar (Assam) road, and the Wokha (Nagaland)-Golaghat (Assam) road via Merapani; and the implementation of strategic roads such as the (proposed). Until 2019, the SARDP-NE authorised road and highway development projects are complete. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also taken into consideration the Perspective Plan 2001 for the development of road infrastructure in the region, which was produced at NEC's request.
  • Assam is building the Bogibeel rail/road bridge across the Brahmaputra. building of rail linkages spanning 2,624 km over 20 major railway projects, including 13 new lines, two gauge conversions, and five doublings; construction of a wide gauge railway line from Bairabi to Sairang in Mizoram; development of the Northeast Frontier Railway Zone The northeast, on the other hand, has a number of connectivity challenges that must be solved before the region can fully realise its potential in this regard.
