Heroin worth over Rs 12.5 lakh seized by Assam Rifles

AIZAWL: In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), recovered 25 gram of heroin worth Rs 12,50,000 in the Runatlang area of the Champhai district on Wednesday. The operation was carried out by a joint team of 8 Assam Rifles and the Champhai police based on specific information, stated a press release.

The team seized the illegal consignment and handed it over to the Champhai police along with an apprehended individual for further legal proceedings. Ongoing smuggling of heroin is a major cause of concern for the State of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar border. Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the 'Sentinels of Northeast' have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram.

PLANTATION DRIVE: Meanwhile, the Serchhip Battalion also organized a Tree Plantation Drive at Champhai on Thursday.

The plantation drive was conducted to encourage the youth to inculcate the habit of planting tree saplings on a regular basis, which would benefit the eco-system for the next generation. The local populace of Champhai village joined the drive and planted 200 saplings with troops of Assam Rifles. The campaign was much appreciated by the village authorities and they expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the initiative by Assam Rifles.
