Guwahati: Despite these harsh and uncertain times, there are certain deeds of kindness that deserve appreciation. In a latest shining example of humanity in the midst of the ongoing crisis, Mizoram MLA ZR Thiamsanga, who was visiting his Constituency, performed an emergency cesarean and helped a woman deliver as no doctors were available to perform the complex procedure.

Thiamsanga is a doctor by profession who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. He often puts on his stethoscope to attend to medical emergencies while visiting remote areas in the state.

This time, he was on a visit to his Constituency of Champhai North near the Myanmar border on Monday to take stock of a recent spate of earthquakes that have been occurring on a frequent basis in the region as well as the prevailing coronavirus crisis. "There are numerous natural calamities in the region. In addition to the earthquakes, there have also been landslides" the MLA told The Sentinel Digital over the phone.

On the same day, C Lalhmangaihsangi, a 38-year-old from the remote Ngur village, who was expecting her second child, was bleeding profusely and her condition was "critical."

As per reports, the medical officer of the Champhai hospital was on leave due to health issues and the woman was not in a position to travel to Aizawl, about 200 km away, he said.

"My constituency has been hit by the double whammy of COVID-19 as well as earthquake. During my stay, I came across this case of a lady who was in peril due to pregnancy complications. She was in acute labor pain, there was also a lot of bleeding. The only place where they could have done the cesarian was in Aizawl, a good 200 kilometers away. Furthermore, the roads are not conducive for travel in the rainy season", Thiamsanga told us.

Luckily, the MLA was present at Champai and the village woman's relative in a vehicle cama knocking on his door in the early hours of the morning. "By a stroke of luck, I happened to be present there on that particular date and we were able to arrange a cesarian at the Champai hospital. I call it good fortune", the MLA further added.

Thiamsanga contested the 2018 election on a Mizo National Front (MNF) ticket and defeated sitting Congress MLA TT Zothansanga. The doctor-turned-politician is at present also the vice-chairman of the state Health and Family Welfare Board.

In June, Thiamsanga had hit the headlines when he rushed to attend to a sick security personnel guarding the India-Myanmar border. The MLA crossed a stream and walked several kilometers before he could reach the MLA.
