AIZAWL: Assam Rifles informed that, a massive amount of areca nuts worth Rs 3.51 crore has been recovered and seized from Mizoram’s Indo-Myanmar border. The episode took place on Monday, in the Champhai district of the state. A search operation was launched in the Melbuk area along the international border. 

Assam Rifles in association with the Custom officials initiated the operation based on a prior secretive information. As many as 780 bags of areca nuts were recovered from the area. Later, the seized items were transferred in the hands of custom officials for further investigation process on 13th of February, Monday. 

The joint operations included Serchipp Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) and Custom department. On 5th of February, a team of 42nd Assam Rifles and personnels from Champhai Police seized as much as 119 grams of heroin. The seized contrabands were estimated to be worth Rs 59 lakh. 

The team seized the illicit drugs after intercepting a vehicle during a random checking. The checking was conducted in an village outskirt, Mulakawi village located in Champhai district. The heroin was seized from an individual of Khamrang village in Kolasib district, Vanlalchama. Mizoram police in two different search operations, nabbed six people smuggling heroine worth Rs 4.1 crore, on 23rd January, Monday. 

Based on a prior information, few police personnels intercepted a truck at the Vairengte police station junction located in Kolasib district in Assam border. The team of police after a keen check, recovered 625 grams of heroin which was approximately worth Rs 3.4 crore. As per reports, the truck was approaching towards Assam. The illicit drugs were cunningly packed in 50 soup cases and was sealed in the empty LPGs. 

The driver has been identified by the official as Azizur Rahman Laskar of 40 years old, who was a resident of Assam’s Cachar district Sonai region. Laskar was detained in connection with the matter.
