AIZAWL: Mizoram Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama has asked Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and other officials to help include the Mizo language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. At the 85th All India Presiding Officers' Conference in Patna, he explained that the Mizo language is important for keeping the Mizo people’s cultural identity.
During his address, he highlighted India's unity in diversity, emphasizing that the nation’s strength lies in its vast cultural and linguistic diversity. Lalbiakzama praised India as the “Mother of Democracy” and underscored the importance of recognizing regional languages such as Mizo.
The Speaker said that adding Mizo to the 8th Schedule would help protect the Mizo culture and support India’s efforts to promote its languages and traditions. He also praised the Constitution for keeping the country united while respecting different languages, cultures, and religions.
Meanwhile, earlier last week, Tripura Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Sunday that the state government was trying to get the Kokborok language included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
“In our country, 22 languages are recognized by the Constitution. Our priority is to include Kokborok in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. It’s our demand,” Nath said while addressing the main event to mark the 46th Kokborok Diwas at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan in Agartala.
