AIZAWL: Christmas community feasts were celebrated across Mizoram with immense joy and positivity. Churches began preparations early in the morning, as volunteers from the community cooked a variety of dishes to be shared during the event.
Children took part in special programs that enhanced the festive atmosphere. Staying true to tradition, the feast featured a dedicated section for the relatives of elderly and physically weak individuals who couldn’t attend. Family members of these individuals could register at a counter to receive free meals.
In an effort to reduce environmental impact, many churches responded to the Mizoram Pollution Control Board's request by eliminating disposable plastics during the Christmas feasts. Instead, they used paper cups, steel plates, and, in some cases, banana leaves to serve the food, demonstrating a growing commitment to sustainability.
Churches and communities across Mizoram also organized similar feasts on December 26, with a New Year’s community feast planned for January 2, 2025.
Meanwhile, the previous day, the Christian-majority state of Nagaland celebrated Christmas with great religious zeal, as people participated in special prayer services and enjoyed festive feasts.
Homes, streets, government offices, and commercial buildings were adorned with decorative lights and Christmas stars, while revelers gathered in groups on Christmas Eve Tuesday night, singing carols and wishing everyone a "Merry Christmas."
As the clock struck midnight, fireworks illuminated the sky, and the sound of church bells echoed through the air.
