Guwahati: Mizoram has reported considerable damage after two medium intensity earthquakes jolted the state within a span of 12 hours. However, Mizoram Chief Zoramthanga has said that no casualties have been reported so far.

"Two earthquakes rocked Mizoram within a span of 12 hours. Damage assessment is undertaken by concerned MLA and district administration. Fortunately, no casualties reported so far", Zoramthanga tweeted moments earlier.

An earthquake of 5.3 magnitude on the Richter scale hit the state of Mizoram at 4:10 am in the morning today, affecting the Northeast Indian region as well as the neighbouring states of Myanmar and Bangladesh. The depth of the quake was 20 km while the coordinates of the epicentre are 23.22 (latitude) and 93.24 (longitude). A day earlier, neighbouring Manipur was jolted by a 5.1 magnitude quake at 4:16 pm, with the epicentre 9 km from Ngopa in Mizoram, which also felt the impact of the tremor.

These twin earthquakes have left Mizos in a state of shock, and the Prime Minister of the country Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah came forward to assure "all possible help" from the Centre to assuage the situation.

"Spoke to the Chief Minister of Mizoram, Shri Zoramthanga Ji on the situation in the wake of the earthquake there. Assured all possible support from the Centre", Modi tweeted, while Shah wrote, "I have spoken to Shri Zoramthanga ji, Chief Minister of Mizoram, to review the situation after the earthquake tremors in the state. I assured him all possible support from the central government. Praying for everyone's safety and well-being."
