Aizawl:

The ongoing statewide lockdown has been further extended till June 21, 2021, by the Mizoram state government.

Due to the exponential rise in the cases of the novel coronavirus in Mizoram and in order to curb the spread of this deadly infectious contagion, the government of Mizoram upheld the decision to extend the duration of the ongoing COVID-19 induced lockdown.

Under the Disaster Management Act of 2005, the complete statewide lockdown will be imposed from 4:00 AM of June 14 (tomorrow) till 4:00 AM of June 21, 2021, read the order issued by the state chief secretary of Mizoram, Lalnunmawia Chuaungo.

"It has been decided to continue with the current restrictions imposed to prevent further escalation of COVID-19 cases. The new guidelines with certain modification issued on June 5 will remain in force from June 14 to 21," it said.

The existing lockdown was earlier scheduled to be lifted on June 14, and even before that on June 7, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in the state, it continues to be in force.

Mizoram as of Saturday reported 346 new cases of the COVID-19 infection, taking the total caseload in the state to 15,267 cases. The northeastern state now has 3660 active cases.

So far, 62 people have succumbed to the deadly infectious viral disease, with 52 from the capital city of Aizawl alone.

11,545 people have recovered from the disease and have been discharged. The positivity rate as of Saturday is 8.94%

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 80,834 new Covid-19 cases and 3,303 fatalities. The number of active cases dropped by 54,531, bringing the total number of active cases to 10,26,159. According to the data from the Union Health Ministry, India recorded the lowest cases in the last 71 days. The daily positivity rate of 4.25 percent remained below 10% for 20 days in a row. The recovery rate increased to 95.26 percent in the past 24 hours, with 1,32,062 patients recovering.

This is a huge decrease from a month earlier when India had over 37 lakh active cases. On Saturday, the number of recoveries surpassed the number of daily new cases for the 31st day in a row. However, India continues to record a large number of deaths, and the overall number of deaths in the country as a consequence of the virus has surpassed 3.7 lakh.
