AIZAWL: Mizoram has become the first state in Northeast India to kick off preliminary work for the Census of India, 2027, with the process officially beginning on Wednesday, officials said.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma led by example, completing his self-enumeration under Phase-I of the census — the House Listing and Housing Census — at his official residence through a newly launched online portal.

The Census of India, 2027 marks a significant departure from past practice — it will be conducted digitally for the first time in the country's history.
Along with that, citizens now have the option of self-enumeration, another feature being introduced for the first time. Rather than waiting for an enumerator to visit, residents can log into the official portal, identify their location, and fill in household details themselves.
Upon completing the process, a unique Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) is generated. Citizens must share this ID with the enumerator when they visit, to ensure proper inclusion in the final count.
Following the Chief Minister, other senior Mizoram leaders also completed their self-enumeration. Home Minister K. Sapdanga and PWD Minister Vanlalhlana both undertook the process at their respective residences.
The self-enumeration in Mizoram was facilitated by personnel from the Aizawl Municipal Corporation, the General Administration Department, and the Directorate of Census Operations, with senior state and Census Department officials also present.
The Census of India, 2027 will be conducted in two phases across the country.
Phase-I — the House Listing and Housing Census — began on April 1 in select states and Union Territories. In Mizoram and a few other states, the self-enumeration window runs from April 1 to April 15, followed by the House Listing and Housing Census from April 16 to May 15.
Phase-II — Population Enumeration — is scheduled for February 2027.
Citizens can complete their self-enumeration by visiting the official census portal, logging in with their mobile number, selecting their location, and filling in the required household details. The process is straightforward and can be completed from home.
