AIZAWL: Mizoram Governor VK Singh reiterated the state government's unwavering resolve to fight the escalating drug usage and trafficking threat on Sunday.

Singh spoke at Aizawl's Republic Day celebration, highlighting the significant effort carried out by law enforcement to reduce drug-related crimes and cross-border smuggling.

He stated that in 2024, massive amounts of illegal drugs, weapons, ammunition, and explosives were found by authorities, along with more than 12 lakh kg of illegally imported areca nuts valued at Rs 16.6 crore. 4,568 people were arrested by the state's police and the Excise and Narcotics Department for drug-related offences last year.

In order to address this issue and combat the drug problem, Governor Singh urged religious organisations, NGOs, and civil society organisations to maintain their support.

He also discussed the ongoing attempts to negotiate an agreement for the long-standing boundary conflict with Assam.

The governor also spoke on the state's efforts to improve education and electricity generation, infrastructure development, and the launch of the "Bana Kaih" program to assist farmers and business owners.

He emphasised the government's dedication to advancing the tourism, sports, agriculture, and health sectors in his closing remarks.

Former Union Minister and Army chief, Gen. Vijay Kumar Singh (retd.), was sworn in as the 25th Governor of Mizoram on January 16, 2025. Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi administered the oath at Raj Bhavan.

The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, cabinet members, and other dignitaries.
