Mizoram Govt Distributes Essential Rations to Over 40,000 Refugees Amidst Logistical Challenges

The Mizoram government has begun distributing essential rations to over 40,000 refugees from Myanmar, Manipur, and Bangladesh.

AIZAWL: The Mizoram government has started distributing essential rations to about 40,000 refugees from Myanmar, Manipur, and Bangladesh currently residing in the state. The Food, Welfare, and Consumer Affairs Department (FCS&CA) reported a total of 1,379 metric tons and 30 quintals of rice were allocated for distribution from November 18 onwards.

Rations were obtained from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and distributed across various districts. In some areas, distribution began as early as November 20.

District-Wise Allocation

Champai district: Champhai hosts the largest number of refugees, primarily from Myanmar (13,986) and Manipur (404). A total of 4,533 quintals of rice was allocated, with distribution commencing on November 20.

Lawngtlai District: Hosting refugees from Myanmar (5,922), Bangladesh (2,014), and Manipur (84), Lawngtlai received 2,526 quintals of rice for distribution.


Aizawl District: The capital district has 7,803 refugees, including 3,411 from Myanmar and 4,392 from Manipur. Rice distribution of 2,458 quintals has been delayed due to logistical challenges and verification. District officials have assured us that distribution will begin soon after necessary adjustments are made.


Siaha District: Siaha is hosting 5,953 refugees from Myanmar. Distribution began on November 20, with 1,875 quintals of rice allocated.

Khawzawl District: With only 147 refugees, Khawzawl received a modest allocation of 46 quintals of rice.

33,032 from Myanmar.
7,118 from Manipur
2,014 from Bangladesh

Government Efforts and Challenges
The Ministry of Home Affairs, on behalf of the central government, has allocated Rs. 5 crore for procuring and distributing essential rations. However, logistical challenges and the varying number of refugees have complicated accurate distribution planning.

Local officials are actively monitoring the situation to ensure adequate food and resources reach all refugees. Meanwhile, the state government remains committed to managing the crisis and addressing the urgent needs of displaced individuals.
