IMPHAL: The Mizoram government has lifted the ban on the import of pigs and pig products after more than a year.

In an order issued on Monday, the government stated that the import of pigs and pig products has been allowed to some extent as the outbreak of African swine fever is more or less contained and no new cases of ASF have been reported since January this year.

An official on Tuesday said that the shipping of pig products/goods and pigs which was stopped over a year was abolished since the incidents of African Swine Plague (ASF) cases has lessened in about a month.

He also added that the shipping of pig goods and pigs was permitted to a certain amount because the ASF plague has been kept under control by certain controlling measures and healthcare.

Notably, till January of 2022, no new incident or cases of ASF has been found or detected which would definitely stop the shipping of pig goods and pigs.

Since the shipping of pigs goods or products has been restrained since August 17, 2020. So permission or approval is required from the veterinary science department and state animal husbandry in order to continue the shipping of pigs, an official said. And also a certain certificate or authentication has to be obtained in view of buying and selling pig goods.

An official declared that only pigs which are free from ASF plague are permitted to be shipped or purchased. When purchased or imported, pigs must obtain a health authentication along with a vaccination proof of Common Swine Fever (CSF). Both the certificate should be shown to the officials before shipping the goods.

As per National Action Plan, an official stated that the reproduction of pigs should only be allowed or recontinued after ensuing a certain Standard Operating Procedure that is SOP.

The veterinary science department and animal husbandry claimed that ASF was first located in March 2021 where it has affected around 29,824 pigs affecting almost 272 villages. The case was severe during that time so selling and buying of pig goods were totally restrained and around 10,381 pigs had been slaughtered to stop the ASF plague.
