AIZAWL: In a joint operation by the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police, authorities have seized heroin and methamphetamine tablets worth over Rs 7.64 crore and arrested a drug smuggler in Mizoram.
The operation took place on Tuesday night in Zokhawthar, a border area in Champhai district, where the police and Assam Rifles personnel apprehended the suspect, Lalruatzauva, a 34-year-old resident of Champhai. The drugs, including 2.276 kg of heroin and methamphetamine tablets, were recovered from his possession.
Lalruatzauva was caught smuggling the drugs from Myanmar, which shares a long border with Mizoram. The police have taken him into custody for further investigation and legal action.
This operation highlights the ongoing concerns over the smuggling of drugs and other contraband from Myanmar into India, particularly in Mizoram, where such illegal activities have become a major issue.
This seizure follows another significant drug bust on January 24, when the Assam Rifles and the Excise and Narcotics Department seized heroin worth Rs 35.51 crore in Champhai district, arresting two people in connection with that case.
Mizoram shares a 510 km unfenced border with Myanmar, making it a key route for smuggling drugs like heroin and methamphetamine into India. Assam Rifles and local authorities continue to intensify their efforts to combat illegal trafficking in the region.
