AIZAWL: A terrible incident occurred when a 51-year-old woman and her grandson were discovered dead in their home in Mizoram's Mamit district.

Mamit is about 90 kilometers from Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram.

Rokimi (51) and her grandson Mark Lalawmpuia (age 7) have been named as the victims, according to SP Lalthangpui Pulamte of Mizoram's Mamit district.

The incident came to light after Mamit police station officials in Mizoram received information that a woman and her grandson were discovered dead inside their home with severe cut wounds to their heads.

According to reports, The boy was found lying on a bed covered in blood, the Mizoram police official said. "The police team rushed to the spot and discovered the body of the woman lying in a pool of blood on the floor."

The officials claimed that while the grandson also sustained head injuries from cuts, the grandmother suffered many, severe cuts to her head and neck.

Sources also claimed that a bloody axe had been found inside the residence.

According to Pulamte, a case has been opened under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and a search is currently underway for the woman's husband, who is the primary suspect and may have fled the scene shortly after the murder was committed.

The SP reported hearing from unnamed sources that the couple had a fight on Tuesday night and early on Wednesday.

Additionally, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, the number of murder cases registered in India every year increased slightly to 29,272 in 2021 from 29,193 in 2020.

A total of 30,132 individuals were murdered in India in 2021, according to the NCRB's "Crime in India 2021" report.

Following Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh as the three states with the most suicides among all of India's states in 2021—a year that witnessed 1,64,033 such cases—was Maharashtra.
