AIZAWL: The government of Mizoram has officially invited the Assam government to hold official-level talks in mid-April over the long-standing border conflict between the two states. This was announced by Mizoram Home Secretary Vanlalmawia on Friday.

In a recent letter sent to Assam, this marks the fourth time Mizoram has requested official-level talks prior to the upcoming ministerial-level discussions scheduled to take place in Guwahati. Vanlalmawia stated that Mizoram is currently awaiting a response from Assam regarding this proposal. The aim of these official-level discussions is to establish the groundwork and modalities for the subsequent ministerial-level talks.

The home secretary noted that during the last ministerial-level meeting held in Aizawl on August 9 of the previous year, Mizoram had already suggested official-level talks on three separate occasions before the anticipated fifth round of ministerial discussions. In response to earlier communications, the Assam government had proposed to hold these official-level talks in the third week of March; however, Mizoram declined the offer due to the assembly session and the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The border dispute involves three districts in Mizoram namely Aizawl, Kolasib, and Mamit which share a 164.6 km border with Assam’s Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts. In the last round of ministerial talks, both states agreed to conduct the next meeting in Guwahati before March 31 and to organize joint cultural and sports festivals to foster better relations between the border districts.
