AIZAWL: Mizoram reported 719 dengue cases with one dead from Jan 1 to Nov 3, according to state health and family welfare department officials on Tuesday.

State Vector-Borne Disease Control Program (SVBDCP) officials expressed concern about the disease's winter presence, citing that 38 individuals tested positive for Dengue from 173 samples in the last week of Nov. Over the past 11 months, 8,562 suspected cases were tested, out of which 719 were confirmed positive.

Aizawl district recorded the highest number of cases at 503, with Lunglei district in south Mizoram reporting 176 cases, and the Myanmar border Champhai district registering 14 cases.

The state identified its first dengue cases in 2012, with six infections. The cumulative cases up until October of this year amounted to 5,596. Dengue cases have been steadily increasing over the years, but they significantly decreased during 2020 and 2021 due to prolonged lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cases increased to 1,868 with five deaths in 2022. The previous year saw two fatalities, while this year has recorded one death thus far. The highest number of infections was recorded in 2023, with 2,060 cases from 12,949 samples and two fatalities.

The state health authorities continue to monitor and address the situation, urging residents to remain vigilant against the spread of the disease.
