Aizawl: Mizoram emerged as a popular tourist destination in 2024, attracting over 52,000 visitors from across the country and the world. As per statistics made public by the state tourism department, a total of 52,235 tourists visited the state during the previous year.
Of them, 42,184 were domestic tourists, and 10,051 were foreign tourists from different corners of the globe.
The tourism figures also showed that between April 2023 and March 2024, over 2.19 lakh tourists had come to Mizoram. Among them, there were 3,884 foreign tourists from a minimum of 14 countries, including the United States, Britain, Japan, and Israel.
Although the figure was impressive, it was marginally lower than the record of 2.22 lakh visitors in 2022-23, which included 2.18 lakh domestic tourists and 3,551 foreigners.
Authorities added that the tourists came to Mizoram for diverse reasons such as discovery, business, and private visits to relatives. The state's distinct scenery, heritage, and unique local culture still attract travelers in pursuit of a non-touristy experience.
Tourism in Mizoram was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The state welcomed a paltry 20,564 visitors in 2020-21. But things picked up in 2021-22, with 1.32 lakh tourists. The consistent rebound in tourist traffic in recent years is indicative of Mizoram's increasing popularity as a holiday destination.
Aizawl, the capital city, was the most visited place in Mizoram in 2024 with 24,559 domestic and 822 foreign visitors. Champhai district was next with 5,500 visitors, of which 497 were from foreign nations. Lunglei district also saw a significant influx, with 2,714 domestic and 75 international visitors last year.
With its stunning scenery, vibrant culture, and friendly environment, Mizoram continues to entice tourists seeking an authentic experience. The increasing numbers reflect a promising trend for the state's tourism industry, affirming its status as a must-visit destination in Northeast India.
