Mizoram Speaker Hiphei Resigns from Congress

Guwahati: This certainly is another blow to the ruling party in Mizoram, Congress as the fifth Congress MLA resigns from the party and his post. This time, it is the Congress MLA and Mizoram speaker Hiphei who announces to have resigned from his post. With this, Hiphei resigns from the 40-member House as well as the Congress.

Hiphei has also made it clear that he would be joining the BJP later in the day and this comes as a big jolt for the Congress with just three weeks left for the Assembly elections.

Notably, Hiphei was seven-time Congress legislator and had been a consistent party member with a great contribution towards the party’s upliftment in the state. The Congress MLA submitted his resignation letter to Deputy Speaker R. Lalrinawma, who accepted it. Immediately after the acceptance of resignation, Hiphei went to the Congress Bhavan to resign from the primary membership of the party.

As Mizoram is the only State in the Northeast to have Congress rule, this has been a big challenge for powerful oppositions like BJP to ensure a win over the state and bring under their control. In that context, the continuous resignation of notable party member of Congress is definitely not a good sign for Congress. The Mizoram polls are to take place on November 28.

BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking about Hiphei says that he will be joining the saffron party in Sarma’s presence in Aizawl. Sarma added, “He is a very senior leader. His joining the saffron party will greatly strengthen the organization.”

The Assam minister, however, has not said anything as to whether the party will field Mr. Hiphei from any constituency in the coming Assembly polls or not.

Hiphei was a Congress candidate for the Palak constituency but later replaced him with party general secretary K.T. Rokhaw last week. This came into action when the party got to know that Hiphei has probabilities of moving to the BJP.
