Mizoram: Stone Quarry Landslide Toll Rises to 11

AIZAWL: Rescue workers have found three more bodies under the wreckage of the stone quarry in the Maudarh hamlet, two days after the major landslide in Mizoram's Hnahthial district.

With one individual still missing, the death toll now stands at 11, according to the recovery agencies.

It should be noted that although 11 dead bodies were found, there were actually 12 people missing in total, with one still unaccounted for.

The DC said that out of the 12 people, 4 worked for ABCI Infrastructures Pvt Ltd and 8 worked as contractors.

He also added that five soil excavators, a stone crusher, and a drilling machine were all totally buried in the rubble.

The landslide's area is roughly 5,000 square meters, the DC informed.

According to authorities, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, the district government, Assam Rifles soldiers, Border Security Force (BSF), and local volunteers are all keeping an eye on the rescue operation.

According to earlier statements made by Hnahthial Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineet Kumar, the horrific incident took place on Monday at around 3 p.m. in Maudarh village, which is 45 minutes away from Hnahthial town.

One employee was able to leave the scene of the catastrophic avalanche that struck the stone quarry where 13 people were working, according to the SP.

According to eyewitnesses, the quarry's stability was unsettled by the employees' excessive digging, which caused the entire hill to collapse on the workers.

The ABCI, who is extending a portion of national route 54 between Hnahthial town and Dawn hamlet, owns the stone quarry.

According to official sources, the building company will arrange for the transportation of the victims' bodies to the villages where they were killed.

Located in northeast India, the Mizoram state shares borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east and west, respectively.

Each year, landslides cause significant losses in terms of both lives and property in the state.

Over 300 people have died and an equal number of homes have been damaged in Aizawl town during this ten-year period.

In Mizoram, 2001 was a year of terrible calamities.
