THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A tragic incident occurred in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, when a 22-year-old BTech student from Mizoram, Valentine, was stabbed to death close to his college on Saturday evening. The attack took place at about 10:30 PM on a junction about 200 meters away from the Rajadhani Institute of Engineering and Technology in Nagaroor.
Authorities were alerted by local residents, and Valentine was initially rushed to a nearby hospital before being transferred to KIMS Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries early Sunday morning.
Police have detained a fellow student from Mizoram in connection with the stabbing. Initial investigations show that the fight could have been triggered by a disagreement between the two students, who were said to have a history of altercations, usually fueled by alcohol. The two had previously been thrown out of the college hostel because of their constant quarrels.
This incident reflects an alarming pattern of violence on the campuses of Kerala, which have experienced numerous student clashes that escalate into deadly altercations. Three significant student killings tied to political rivalries and personal grudges have occurred in recent years. Official data reveal an uptick in violence on the campuses since 2016, with 500 instances, three of them murders, involving mainly student wings of political parties.
As the murder of Valentine is investigated, officials are looking into the circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter, raising questions about student safety and law enforcement effectiveness within educational environments.
