AIZAWL: The Mizoram State University Bill, 2024, and a proposal to establish the Mizoram State University have received the nod from the state council of ministers, paving the way for its introduction in the upcoming budget session of the state assembly.
A senior government official stated that setting up a state university has become essential to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. “Though Mizoram already has two universities, Mizoram University is a central institution, and the Indian Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) University is private. The state government must establish its university to fulfill the NEP’s mandate,” the official explained.
The budget session, expected to begin in February of next year, will likely see the introduction of the state university bill during its proceedings, the official added.
In another major decision, the council of ministers approved the conversion of Zoram Medical College (ZMC) at Falkawn village near Aizawl into a fully government-run institution. With this move, all employees under the ZMC society will be absorbed into the state government service.
The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government, which assumed office on December 8, 2023, had earlier expressed intentions to hand over ZMC to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. However, the central government declined the proposal, instead offering a special package to upgrade the college.
