AIZAWL: The Mizoram government is embarking on a significant initiative to prepare its young athletes for the 2036 Olympics, which India aims to host. This announcement was made by Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar during a recent session in the state Assembly.
The initiative, named the Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS) scheme, is brought under the state's 'Bana Kaih' (Handholding) programme. It will focus on 8-15 years old children and offer coaching in a need-based manner to enhance their skill levels and prepare them for higher-level competitions in the future. Launched by Chief Minister Lalduhoma in January 2025, the program aims to identify and nurture sporting talent, even in the most remote corners of Mizoram.
In support of this move, the state government has allocated Rs 2.5 crore and is using a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode to facilitate active community participation and sustainable development. Minister Hmar stressed the dream of witnessing Mizo sportsmen compete at international levels and perform well in sports where they could win medals.
In addition, the government is collaborating with sports experts from other states to enhance coaching standards and plans to procure modern sports equipment to improve training facilities for the youth.
By making such strategic investments and collaborations, Mizoram is planning to build a solid ground for its athletes so that they can participate in the 2036 Olympics and future Olympic events. This move reflects the state's seriousness towards nurturing talent and encouraging sports at the grassroots level.
