AIZAWL: The Zo Re-Unification Organization (ZORO) has announced that it will stage demonstrations in all districts of Mizoram on January 29 to protest the alleged abolition of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the implementation of a new border pass system along the Indo-Myanmar border.
The organization represents the Zo or Mizo tribes in India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Under the chairmanship of President R. Sangkawia, the organization met to discuss a number of issues, among them border fencing and deportation of Bangladeshi refugees.
During the meeting, ZORO decided to stage protests in Aizawl and other places across the land, where they plan to burn copies of government notifications regarding the cancellation of the FMR and the introduction of a new border pass system in place.
The meetings have urged the central government to revoke the notification that halted the FMR, a directive that allowed visa-free movement across the border.
Sangkawia condemned MHA for supplanting FMR with another system where its residents living inside 10-kilometer distance need to have the border pass. Such new regulation under the new act will come into effect from 1st of January where a border pass has to be availed from the Assam Rifles to cross into and go out of Myanmar within seven days of stay there.
Besides, ZORO has also voiced its concern regarding the alleged back push of 28 Bangladeshi refugees by the state government and Assam Rifles, who, according to the reports, sought shelter in Mizoram. The organization is set to join hands with Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) to raise the issues with the central government.
