AIZAWL: The Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) has registered a comfortable victory in the recently concluded village council (VC) and local council (LC) elections in Mizoram, winning a majority of 266 out of 543 VCs and 54 out of 110 LCs. The State Election Commission (SEC) announced the final results on Thursday, indicating the ruling party's resounding performance.
On the contrary, the Mizo National Front (MNF), being the main opposition party, secured a majority in 122 VCs and 27 LCs. Wednesday's election was a peaceful one in nine districts except in three Autonomous District Councils (ADC). The voter turnout was remarkable as 75.37% of more than 440,000 registered voters took part in the VC polls and 64.79% in the LC polls.
Although there are 544 VCs and 111 LCs, polling was postponed for a three-member Lalnutui village council in Lunglei district and a seven-member Lawipui local council due to the death of candidates. Moreover, there were no elections in nine VCs in seven districts since all the candidates, who belonged mainly to the ZPM, were elected unopposed.
The Congress party won a majority of 43 VCs and 14 LCs, and the BJP won 1 VC. Independent candidates won 7 VCs and 2 LCs, as per the SEC.
