AIZAWL: F. Rodingliana, Mizoram's Minister of State for Power and Electricity, on Tuesday expressed confidence that the construction of the 120-megawatt Tlawng Hydro-Electric Project could begin next year.
In a media interaction at the proposed dam site near North Lungleng village in Aizawl district, along the Tlawng River, Rodingliana stated that the Central Water Commission (CWC), which began its survey and investigation work in February 2015, is making progress in preparing the detailed project report (DPR).
In 2014, the Union Ministry of Water Resources allocated Rs 11.55 crore for the survey and investigation of the project, entrusting the Central Water Commission (CWC) with the responsibility.
Initial survey findings suggest that the project will have a capacity of 120 megawatts, with plans for a 120-meter-high dam near North Lungleng village. The project is expected to submerge 2,888 hectares of uncultivable land and 187 hectares of cultivable land. While several village council areas will be affected, the report indicates that no entire villages will be submerged.
The dam is expected to stretch as far as Ramlaitui in Lunglei district, southern Mizoram.
The CWC has completed the topographical survey, geotechnical investigation, seismic study, and construction material survey, with significant progress made in the foundation study. Remaining tasks include the assessment of deep ground conditions and drifting.
The dam's capacity to store 1,009.6 million cubic meters of water will help replenish the declining water levels of the Tlawng River, the state's largest and most significant river.
