AIZAWL: In Mizoram, a peaceful demonstration was organized in front of the state assembly hall on Friday, led by two influential student bodies, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) and Mizo Students' Union (MZP). The students were protesting against the alleged nepotism exhibited by Assembly Speaker Lalrinliana Sailo and Assembly Secretary Lalhmahruaia Zote in the recent recruitment conducted by the state assembly secretariat.
The student's main demand was the immediate cancellation of the appointment of 11 staff members, as they claimed that nine out of the eleven individuals were close relatives of Sailo and Zote. Accusations of nepotism were made against the speaker and secretary, asserting that they had shown favoritism towards their own kin.
The state assembly had recently recruited staff for various positions such as assistants, translators, Upper Division Clerks, and Lower Division Clerks. However, the majority of these appointments were allegedly given to close relatives of the speaker and secretary.
During the protest, the students adopted resolutions, including the cancellation of the contested appointments and the insistence on conducting a new recruitment process adhering to the assembly's recruitment rules. They vowed to continue their agitation until their demands were met.
The leaders of MZP and MSU also seized the opportunity to meet with Chief Minister Zoramthanga, urging him to take necessary actions to cancel the appointments. They further requested a review of the existing recruitment rules to prevent future occurrences of nepotism.
In response, Chief Minister Zoramthanga assured the student leaders that he would take all necessary steps to address the issue. Meanwhile, the Assembly secretariat issued a statement clarifying that the appointments were made in strict accordance with the Mizoram Assembly Secretariat (Recruitment and Condition of Services) Rules of 1955. The statement emphasized that the staff members were selected based on merit through a written examination.
The ongoing student protests highlight the rising concerns regarding nepotism and favoritism in government institutions. The demand for transparency, accountability, and fair recruitment processes resonates strongly with the Mizo student community. As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the authorities to see how they address these allegations and ensure a just resolution that restores faith in the recruitment system.
