MLCU holds review meet on Draft Education Policy

A CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG: The Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) held a consultation on the Draft National Education Policy 2019 on November 16 in the varsity premises.

The consultation was held with the aim of adopting the essential elements of the Policy in developing a blueprint for its undergraduate education.

Carmo Naronha, Executive Director, Bethany Society, gave the keynote address on 'Universal Design for Learning', that is universally inclusive of all learners.

He emphasised on the need to do away with the myth of the "average brain" and the "average student" where the focus should be shifted instead to the variables in learners' learning methods thus ensuring that the formulation of any learning design is done so in a learner-centered fashion. "We cannot just keep telling our learners-We to have just one education system; it is the best, take it or leave it. Very often that is how we kill their intellectual and creative capacity. A good education system will teach its learners to see a pattern where others see chaos, " he stated.

This was followed by group discussions on various themes pertaining to the Draft National Education Policy like multidisciplinary curriculum, community learning, department and faculty autonomy, program and performance evaluation, faculty career management, learning methods, open and distance learning, self-directed learning, fine arts, aesthetics, and culture.

Billian Lamare, Headmistress, Sein Jaintia School, Torist Mark, retired Director, Elementary and Mass Education, Dr. Beryl Buam, Associate Professor, College of Teacher Education, Shillong, Carmo Naronha, Executive Director, Bethany Society, Dr. Ananya Guha, Retd. Director, IGNOU, Shillong, Bryan Wahlang, Principal, Kiddies Corner School, Bakerlang L. Nonglait, Graphic designer and MLCU alumnus participated in the group discussions along with the faculty and staff of MLCU.
